Een halve eeuw is wel een mijlpaal. Gesetteld, weinig zorg voor kinderen, zaakjes goed op een rij… en nog jong genoeg om te dansen en te feesten. Een mooie reden (als die er al moet zijn) om te vieren of gevierd te worden.
Van mannen zegt men dan: hij heeft Abraham gezien.
En voor de dames: zij heeft Sara(h), (de bijbelse vrouw van Abra(ha)m) gezien.
Op je 50ste hoor je over de wijsheid van Abraham te beschikken….
Zo weet je meteen waar Abraham de mosterd haalt.
Dat betekent dan weer: weten wat er in de wereld te koop is, er het fijne van weten, goed op de hoogte zijn van de zaak.
Het zou slaan op een misbegrepen bijbeltekst: 'Waar haalt Abraham de mutsaard'. Dit is de takkenbos die hij voor het offeren (van zijn zoon) had gehaald.
Ook een aantal andere kroonjaren (veelvouden van 10) is genoemd naar Bijbelse personen.
60 jaar: Isaak (of Rebekka)
70 jaar: Jacob (of Rachel)
80 jaar: Jozef (of Asnat)
90 jaar: Efraïm
100 jaar: Metusalem
Sinds 1992 (12de druk) zegt Van Dale over Sara: "pop van brooddeeg, banket, vlees of stof in de vorm van een oude vrouw, die een vrouw op haar vijftigste verjaardag ten geschenke wordt gegeven".
Ook Abraham krijgt in verschillende streken een versierde brood- of banketpop in de vorm van een (oude) man, met een bril, pijp, staf en een baard.
